Panel Discussion on Sustainable Policy at Federal, Provincial, and Municipal Levels


Come learn how each level of government is working to combat climate change. Gain a further understanding of each government’s jurisdiction to affect change and what levers they can pull to set direction and create economic action. We will learn how a policy gets rolled out through each level of government, and find out how you can get involved in the political process. This will be followed by a 10 to 15 minute Q&A session. The panel will feature:
  • Federal: Honourable Minister Catherine McKenna - Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Ottawa Centre Riding
  • Provincial: Member of Provincial Parliament Joel Harden - Ottawa Centre Riding
  • Municipal: Councillor David Chernushenko - Chair of the Environment Committee, Capital Ward

Mayoral Candidates Panel on Sustainable Policy for the City of Ottawa

Find out what your mayoral candidates’ plans are towards sustainability for the City of Ottawa. Find out any strategies they may have for making our city more sustainable and how they will move these forward with city council.  This will be followed by a 10 minute Q&A session.

Capital Ward Candidates Panel on Sustainable Policy for the City of Ottawa

Find out what your Capital Ward candidates’ plans are towards sustainability for the City of Ottawa. Learn what their three core goals are for this term regarding sustainable activity and what they intend to do to achieve them. What are their plans for participating on the city’s Environment Committee and what they will bring to the table. A 10 minute Q&A session will follow.

A case for Solar: Accelerating the adoption of residential Solar in Ontario
Speaker:  Matthew Britt, CEO/Founder, Switch Energy

​Matthew will review the current state of solar in Canada, Ontario and the rest of North America.  We'll look at how each of us can make the adoption of solar something that happens faster, and how the technologies today are creating the 3rd industrial revolution.

Panel:  Travelling with your Electric Vehicle - You mean we can travel long distances with these?
​The Electric Vehicle Council of Ottawa will be moderating a panel on the ups and downs of planning a trip with an electric vehicle. Panel members are:
  • Gérard Gavrel  – travelled to Vancouver
  • Paul Camiré & Hannah Bernatchez   - 250,000 km on their Volt
  • Raymond Leury – travelled to South Carolina to see the Eclipse

Problem Solving and Repurposing through Design for Home and Business
Speaker:  Heather Jeffery, Owner, Re4m


Heather, owner of Re4m Design and Fabrication, will be talking about the importance of repurposing, recycling and reducing materials in your home and business. Everyone has heard of repurposing and creating new items from otherwise discarded materials, but where do you get the materials? What types of items can be made? Is it worth the efforts to repurpose and reuse? What are the benefits? Heather will be answering many of these questions in this segment dedicated to educating those who are passionate about not only pursuing a zero waste lifestyle but exploring authentic and budget friendly design ideas.

An introduction to the Zero Waste lifestyle
Speaker:  Valerie Leloup, Partner, NU Grocery

Tired of the amount of solid waste that you produce in your daily life? Then you might be ready for a change! This session provides an introduction to the zero waste lifestyle with practical tips to jumpstart your own journey towards zero waste. You will learn about the “5 Rs” and how to apply them to your daily life - at home and in your work environment. It also presents the environmental, financial and health benefits that come with a life where you own less, waste less and live more.

A Case for the Micro-Grid

Speaker:  Dr. Art Hunter, Freedom Energy Project

​For the past three years, Art has been developing a very comprehensive micro-grid living laboratory in Ottawa. Recently, he and his wife have been living on 100% electrification with a micro-grid system. Come and find out how he did it!
