Northern Nomad – Tiny House Capstone Design Project

Friday - 12 - 5pm / Saturday 10 am - 4pm
DROP IN ANYTIME

Carleton U, Architecture Building

1125 Colonel By Drive Ottawa ON
www.thenorthernnomad.ca
The Northern Nomad is a tiny house born from the collaborative efforts of Carleton architecture and engineering students. Under the supervision of Scott Bucking, Associate Professor in Building Information Modelling in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, the conceptualization of the project began as the fourth-year capstone project of five Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering students in the fall of 2016. The current team consists of several Carleton students from the Faculty of Engineering and Design, each with their own focuses and skills, that have made the project become a reality. As of Summer 2019, the house has entered the instrumentation and testing phase overlooking the river beside Richcraft Hall.

The project will strive to demonstrate that an Ottawa home with a small building footprint can achieve net-zero energy.

Designed and built by students at Carleton U.

Reilly’s Country Gardens Tours

Picture
Saturday  / Sunday 10am - 4pm
3328 Diamondview Road, Kinburn, ON

Reilly’s Country Gardens, the name of our property, features a once very drafty 130 year-old farmhouse which has been updated, over our 43 years of occupancy, to an energy-saving home and extensive ornamental and food-producing gardens.

The house features heating by a ductless air to air heat pump and two propane parlour stoves, a whole-house air exchanger, triple-glazed windows with reflective coatings, and a propane generator to provide electricity to home and two greenhouses when grid shut-downs occur. We have a 10kW solar system, installed 8 years ago, which is grid-connected. To reduce our carbon footprint, we utilize two electric vehicles (one all-electric and the other a gas/electric hybrid) to reduce transportation-related fossil fuel consumption.

Our one-acre property, operated as a perennial plant nursery for 25 years but closed 10 years ago to enjoy our years of retirement, continues to feature 35 ornamental garden beds. The property, certified as “Backyard Habitat” by the Canadian Wildlife Federation, features many native plants and a waterfall/pond installation. The property is also certified as a “Monarch Waystation” by Monarch Watch.

Since retirement we have added vegetable and fruit production beds to the property. We also have an outdoor season-extending greenhouse, allowing vegetable production and root crop harvesting into the early winter months, and have an indoor greenhouse which, with artificial lighting, provides production of vegetable greens and cherry tomatoes for winter consumption. Over-wintering storage of root vegetables is done in an unheated crawl space and an unheated cellar. We also, by the canning process and freezing, preserve much of our garden produce for winter consumption.

We will gladly tour visitors around our energy conserving and production areas and talk about our efforts to be as food self-sufficient as the Ottawa climate permits
